Back in april, she had a paper super hero mask, which lasted for months. It finally ripped on the nose bridge a few months ago and I promised her that I will make her a fabric mask so that it'll last longer… That was months ago.
Yesterday, Aina asked, "Binggi, you said that you'll make me a superhero mask out of fabric… let's make one today!"
So we did. She chose which fabrics she wants to use for the mask and we started working.
All we needed was:
- fabrics, two different one for two different sides.
- rubber band.
- needle, thread and scissors.
- embroidery needle and thread for the edging (optional).
- I should've used backing fabrics… a thick one, perhaps, to retain the shape so that it doesn't push into the eye cavity when the rubber band stretched.
I drafted a paper mask for the pattern, making sure that the eye holes are in the right place. You can use the backing instead of paper, if you have backing fabric laying around.
If you're using the backing fabric, stick the backing on the fabric's wrong side before cutting.
We then cut the fabrics in the shape of the pattern, leaving about 7mm around the peripherals. Cut slits on each fabric pieces so that it can be folded following the curved shapes. Then fold the edges toward the wrong side. iron the folded edges to retain the shape.
Sew the two pieces together with the wrong side facing each other. It's easier doing it by hand… don't forget leave the sides open for the rubber band.
Measure the rubber band so that it fits the head. If you don't use the backing, make sure you don't do it to tightly, or else, the fabric will push too hard into the eye cavity when the rubber band is stretched, and it will be super uncomfortable to wear.
Oh, you can also use strings instead of rubber band.
Once you attach the rubber band on each side, you can decorate the mask however you like. I did an easy blanket stitch, just to make it look a little neater.
You can make the pattern however you want: batman mask, owl mask… whatever you and your child like :)
